Worksheet: Emily Davison accident or suicide?

After several requests to the History Academy on Facebook, I have uploaded my classic worksheet version of Emily Davison, accident or suicide, that I posted 17 years ago on schoolhistory,co.uk. This lesson has been designed to help students studying the historical controversy surrounding her death. It can be used with the full spectrum of ability, but the text level of the task would suit middle and upper ability students. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a fully editable two page worksheet well as an accompanying PowerPoint. The Word document includes a brief introduction and a source investigation into the death of Emily Davison. in 1913. Students summarize their learning into a table in preparation for writing either an essay, newspaper or police report into her death. The PowerPoint presentation is designed to help facilitate the lesson and includes aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starters, plenaries, appropriate video clip links, assessment questions, pupil mark schemes and feedback sheets. The lesson kicks off with a either a snowballing starter activity or a source analysis of the suffragette newspaper. This is followed by a brief one side introduction to Emily Davison and her background. The next two slides discuss the historical controversy and include quotes from historians supporting each interpretation. This is then followed up by completing the source investigation, Once this is complete, students can then feedback and then do a follow up assessment on the topic. This optional, but I've included additional slides with a pupil mark scheme that can be easily adapted for to your own assessment scheme if necessary. At various points, I have included links to useful video clips. These can be accessed when the PP is in show mode by clicking on the play button. This tried and tested resource has been designed to help students understand why Britain followed a policy of appeasement in 1938. It can be used as a starter, plenary, revision or assessment activity and is suitable for a wide range of abilities. When you purchase this resource you be able to download a Word Document with two heading cards labelled 'arguments for appeasement and ‘arguments against’, along with sixteen statement cards that have been carefully written to reflect the views and opinions of people at the time. Once students have sorted through the statements, they could then arrange them in their order of importance as the next step to using them as the basis for writing an extended answer or essay on the topic. These tried and tested resource looks at one of the most amazing feats of the modern age, the building of the railways in Victorian Britain. The accomplishment of the navvies, often overlooked in history, rivals that of the pyramid builders and those who built the Great Wall of China. This resource is part of a series that have been written on the Transport Revolution. It follows on from the birth of the railways, but can be sued a stand alone resource. The PowerPoint is design to support the worksheet, but can be used independently. The activities are designed to appeal to a wide range of learners. There are five activities in the PowerPoint including, a snowballing starter of the key words, a class debate, heads and tails, labelling exercise and a word search. The aims and objectives are: Theme: Transport Revolution 1750 - 1900 Know: What problems faced engineers whilst building the railways? Understand: How did engineers overcome the shape of the land? If you are looking for a fun, interactive revision game that can be used as a starter or plenary then this resource for you. It particularly good at injecting a bit of competition which will draw in some of those under achieving students, especially the boys who might be very good at learning key facts via a game. These revision cards cover the key factors that you will need to know for 19th Century Public Health in Britain. They make an excellent fun starter, mini plenary or plenary to any lesson. They can also be used by students as revision flash cards. I’ve provided them in word so you can easily adapt them for your own classes. There are three main ways that you can use them. Game 1 involves getting students to read out the key words until the other guesses the topic correctly. Game 2 involves additional challenge and stretch by getting students to describe the topic without using any of the key words on the card. The third game, which adds an additional layer of fun or challenge involves playing a round of Pictionary or Charades. I normally give my students 3 minutes of each round to help activate the learning and warm up the class. You could also have a freestyle round where students decide which game they want to play linked to their learning style. If you are trying to engage some under achieving boys, add some competition and get them to keep score in the back of their books. I would recommend printing them off on card and getting your students to cut them out. Then put the cards into an envelope for class use. If you are a student then keep them in your pocket and use them as a flash card to help you learn the key facts, If there is a term that you do not understand then as your teacher or do some extra research. From a revision perspective, you can print off the cards and get your students to learn the key words for a test or for their exams. These are a win, win resource. The kids will love them and they will help to improve your results. This resource is supplied in Microsoft Word so it can be easily edited and adapted to suit your students. Kind Regards Roy

This great activity is designed to help students studying how the Homesteaders survived on the Great Plains as part of a course on the American West. It can be used as either a revision, consolidation exercise or even as a plenary or starter. If you are looking for an accompany resource to cover this topic then please do check out my TES shop. The two page word document contains 14 problems with the solutions that the Homesteaders came up with mixed up. Students cut out the cards and match the problems and solutions under the two headings. Once they have peer reviewed or checked them during a class feedback session, students can then stick them into their books. This great lesson is designed to help students understand how the Homesteaders overcame the problems they faced on the Great Plains such as water supply, natural hazards, extreme weather, protecting crops, bankruptcy, insects and Native Americans. This lesson includes a 26 slide PowerPoint with six core activities including starter, review summary tasks on the problems, thinking skills review activities, card sort and an exam question. I have also included fourteen illustrated information slides to be used either before or after the card sort activity explaining both the problems facing the Homesteaders and the solutions that they came up with. This outstanding resource is a simple card sort that can be used with a range of abilities from foundation to gifted and talented. It looks at one of the most important turning point in both Irish and British History, the Battle of the Boyne, 1690 whose consequences still echo down to the present day. The card sort can be used a starter or plenary. It contains two heading cards labelled ‘Causes of the Battle of the Boyne’ and ‘Consequences of the Battle of the Boyne.’ Students are instructed to sort through fourteen cards. I have deliberately included more consequence cards, than causes cards. They are written with a neutral, non judgemental tone allowing students to form their own opinions. This card sort gets students to sort through a series of statements to help them assess the achievements and limitations of the Homestead Act of 1862. It can be used as either starter or plenary for a lesson on this topic and is a great way to activate the learning an appeal to multiple learning styles. I would recommend getting your students to peer and self assess their answers before sticking them into their books. When you purchase this resource you will receive a single page Microsoft Office Word document, which contains instructions, a learning objective, two heading cards and 16 statements on the Homestead Act of 1862. Once students have cut out the statements and sorted them, they can extend their understanding by reorganising the statements on both sides into their order of importance. The aim of this resource is explain why the USA introduced a policy of isolationism from 1919 to 1939. The learning objectives are as follows: Know: What was the US Policy of isolationism from 1919 – 1941 Understand: Why did the USA follow a policy of isolationism? Analyse: What impact did this policy have on both domestic and international relations? What Am I Looking For? Identify and Describe: the US policy of isolationism and its effects Explain: why the USA introduced isolationism and its effects Analyse: What were the consequences of the US policy of isolationism and come to a judgement on which was the most significant? The starter is a snowballing activity, instructions included. The first part of the presentation then looks at the impact of the First World War and the Treaty of Versailles in the US decision not to sign it or it or join the League of Nations. This is then backed up with a consolidation exercise of a past paper question with a pupil mark scheme which can be easily adapted for peer and self assessment. The next part of the presentation then looks at 6 key consequences of the US policy of isolationism by looking in outline at economic isolationism, immigration controls, Prohibition, the 'Red Scare', Great Depression and the causes of the Second World War. The plenary activity focuses on a thinking skills review triangle, which aims to get students to decide which consequence is the most significant. I have also included a homework activity and some notes with the slides. This resources really well along side my worksheet on US isolation which you can download and buy separately or as bundle with this presentation. Both can be used independently. These revision cards cover the key factors that you will need to know for the Russian Revolution and Stalin’s Russia 1924 - 41. They make an excellent fun starter, mini plenary or plenary to any lesson. They can also be used by students as revision flash cards. I’ve provided them in word so you can easily adapt them for your own classes. This package incudes both sets of revision cards at a discount price. There are three main ways that you can use them. Game 1 involves getting students to read out the key words until the other guesses the topic correctly. Game 2 involves additional challenge and stretch by getting students to describe the topic without using any of the key words on the card. The third game, which adds an additional layer of fun or challenge involves playing a round of Pictionary or Charades. I normally give my students 3 minutes of each round to help activate the learning and warm up the class. You could also have a freestyle round where students decide which game they want to play linked to their learning style. If you are trying to engage some under achieving boys, add some competition and get them to keep score in the back of their books. I would recommend printing them off on card and getting your students to cut them out. Then put the cards into an envelope for class use. If you are a student then keep them in your pocket and use them as a flash card to help you learn the key facts, If there is a term that you do not understand then as your teacher or do some extra research. From a revision perspective, you can print off the cards and get your students to learn the key words for a test or for their exams. These are a win, win resource.
